Hola Che! Y hola eñe!

Emilio tiene un nuevo juguete! Ayer, cuando Jack y Julie vinieron a cuidarlo le trajeron regalos, incluido este Che Guevara.

Steve y yo salimos solos por primera vez y dejamos a Emilio en la buena compañia de Jack y Julie. Fuimos a ver la nueva obra de teatro La Historia de las Bombas de un niño. Es una reflexión sobre la guerra, las armas y las consecuencias de la violencia a lo largo de la historia. Nos parecio que si lo ibamos a dejar a Emilio por primera vez deberiamos a asistir a algo importante y relevante.

Al volver, Jack y Julie nos contaron que Emilio se portó bien, a pesar de que lloró un poco y que estuvo muy sonriente de a ratos. Como salió tan bien, tal vez lo hagamos una vez al mes! Esto me hace sentirme mejor, ya que el Martes ya empiezo a trabajar y a Emilio lo va a cuidar Gladys por primera vez. Gladys es amiga de una amiga mia de la escuela y ya tiene experiencia cuidando bebés. Es de Colombia asi que le podrá hablar en Español a Emilio, lo cual es importante para Steve y para mi.

Hoy, tambien quiero darle la bienvenida a la eñe, ahora que sé como hacerla: Hola eñe!


Steve and I went on our first date alone here in Chicago since Emilio was born (we went out in Texas a few times this winter break) and we left Emilio in the great company of Jack and Julie. They came over ready to have fun with Emilio and with gifts for all of us, including this Che Guevara doll for the babe.
We went to the Neo-Futurist, our favorite theater to see A Child’s History of Bombing, a reflection about war, violence, racism and their consequences in history. As usual, there were some elements of the play we liked a lot, but we still prefer their regular show, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.

When we came back, two hours later, Jack and Julie reported that they had had a great time with Emilio, who besides crying for a little while and refusing to burp (he just doesn’t like to be interrupted when he eats, even if he has so much gas he looks like a hot air balloon) dedicated them with several smiles and laughs. We are hoping this becomes a monthly thing at least until their own baby is born and we have to return the favor (I will feel much more confident of babysitting then)I’m glad he had a good time. Hopefully, on Tuesday when I leave him with Gladys, his new babysitter, he’ll have a good time too. Gladys is from Colombia and has experience of taking care of babies. She’ll be able to speak Spanish to Emilio, which is very important to Steve and me.

Hostia, que ya soy español, coño/Emilio, a member of the European Union

Pues eso, pues nada, Emilio ya es oficialmente espanol. Ya esta registrado en el Consulado espanol en Chicago con su nombre oficial Emilio Ruiz Benton. Fue un poco complicado porque queriamos mi apellido antes que el del padre y bueno, Espana parece andar un poquito atrasada con respecto al tema de los apellido. Ah, las sociedades patriarcales! Yo renove mi pasaporte espanol y me dieron el nuevo modelo. Es muy bonito, con animales en cada pagina y un mapa del mundo donde muestra donde migra cada animal.

Parece que hoy ya vuelve el frio, pero en los ultimos dias ha seguido el buen tiempo y Emilio y yo hemos salido a pasear. Ayer, quedamos con mi amiga Kristen (papa y mama probaron su sopa de verduras exquisita que ella preparo para mi cuando nacio Emilio) y los tres nos fuimos a Sweet Ocassions tomar smoothies y comer ensaladas y sandwiches. Emilio durmio casi todo el rato pero abrio los ojos cuando abri el libro que Kristen le habia traido.

A couple of days ago I went to Spanish Consulate to pick up my new Spanish passport (they gave me the new one, with animals in each page, really pretty) and they told me Emilio was already registered as a Spanish citizen.
I wonder if now he will start swearing in Spanish!

Before the cold weather comes back, Emilio and I are going out often to enjoy fresh air and sun. Yesterday we met with my friend Kristen, (who cooked a great vegetable soup for me after Emilio was born) and went to Sweet Ocassions to eat and chat. Emilio slept the whole time but he woke up in time to check out the new book Kristen got for him. I was worry when he was born because I hadn't bought any books for him but fortunately, friends and relatives are helping us build a nice library for him.

Staying Warm/Calentitos en casa

En estos ultimos dias ha hecho mucho frio en Chicago asi que Emilio y yo no hemos salido mucho de casa. Afortunadamente, nuestro apartamento esta calentito por lo que Emilio puede usar ropa sin mangas como la de la foto. Me gusta como le queda la ropa sin mangas porque se le ven los brazos regordetes. Tiene manos grandes no? igual que yo! El sigue jugando con sus cubos, leyendo (o mejor dicho masticando) sus libros y presando atencion a todo a su alrededor.



Yo he estado cocinando, aunque no me lo crean. Tengo un libro, Good Food Fast (Buena comida rapida) con recetas variadas y muy faciles de hacer. En estos dias he preparada Spaguetti a la carbonara, kedgeree (arroz con crema, tipico de la comida Anglo-
India) con judias verdes y setas, sopa crema de maiz y mariscos, brochetas de hongos con panceta, pollo y maiz y de postre prepare melocotones al horno cubiertos de una salsa especial. Mi proximo plato sera Pollo Tandoori (al estilo indio) y de postre quiero hacer unas tarteletas de frutas del bosque. Ya se que no tengo la buena mano de cocinera de mi abuela y mi madre (esa la heredo mi hermana Gimena) pero como se leer, puedo seguir una receta y todo sale mas o menos decente. Tengo suerte que Steve come todo lo que cocino (tanto si le gusta como si no).

Although it has been really cold in Chicago for the past several days, our apartment is always comfortably warm, which allows Emilio to wear these pretty sleeveless outfits. I like these outfits because I can see his chubby arms. I love the fact that he’s got big hands like me. I hope someday he can play he piano like his papa.
Because of the weather we haven’t been going out together, but Emilio entertains himself with his cubes, reading (or should I say chewing?) his books or just simply observing everything that surrounds him.

I’ve been cooking these last few days, (can you believe it?) I got this great book I bought for 5 bucks at Borders a long time ago called Good Food Fast with great and easy recipes.
In the past few days I’ve prepared several things: kedgeree with green bens and mushrooms, spaghetti carbonara, corn, mushroom with bacon and chicken kebabs, crab and corn chowder and baked peaches for dessert. . My sister is the one who inherited my mom’s and grandmas cooking skills but everything I cooked has been eatable. (I’m lucky Steve will eat anything I cook)

Visit from Texas and mail from Japan

Hoy Emilio recibio una visita de Texas y un regalo de Japon. La visita fue Amy Nelson, la esposa del primo de Steve, Gary. Por primera vez escuchamos una pequena carcajada de Emilio que le dedico a Amy. Mas tarde, tambien se rio conmigo. Cada dia hace algo nuevo! Amy le trajo dos libros muy lindos, sobre todo Love You Forever.



El regalo era de Barbara Sale, la otra maestra que conoci en China, aqui en la foto a la derecha, con Kathy Kress (la mama de Tao y Maya) . Barbara le mando una hemosa munequita japonesa hecha de madera, un kimono y un babero. Muchas gracias Barbara!



Today Emilio recieved a visit from Texas and a package from Japan. the visit was Amy Nelson, Gary's wife who made Emilio laugh for the first time. Amy brought him two great books, including the great story Love You Forever.

The package was from Barbara Sale (on the right, with Kathy Kress) a good friend I met in China. She sent a pretty wooden japanese doll, a kimono and a bib. Thank you so much, Barb!

Emilio's First Valentine's Day

Ayer Martes fue el dia de San Valentin y Emilio lo celebro jugando con los cubos que le regalaron sus tias Lisa y Melissa. Los cubos son de diferentes colores y texturas. El amarillo tiene un espejo, el verde vibra y el rojo y el azul tienen diferentes texturas.
Para su primer San Valentin, Emilio recibio una tarjeta de mi amiga Kathy y su familia que viven en Denver. Yo los conoci en China, cuando Tao, su hijo mayor, tenia tres anos. Ahora Tao esta en 4to grado y cada ano he ido a visitarlos a Denver. Este ano no pude y los extrano mucho. Tengo muchas ganas de que conozcan a Emilio. Tanto Tao como su hermana Maya son ninos maravillosos y muy carinosos con otros ninos.

En la foto,que saque hace dos anos, estan con sus perros, Fiona y Finnegan.
Se que extranan mucho a Finnegan, que murio hace un tiempo.

Yesterday was V-Day, the first one for Emilio. He played with the cubes he got for Christmas from his aunties Lisa and Melissa.

He also recieved a very nice card from Kathy Kress and her family, Mike, Tao and Maya. They live in Denver and we met in China when Tao was 3 years old (the day I met him he ate a whole Pizza Hut pizza all by himself. I was really impressed. It was really love at first sight for the two of us) He is in 4th grade now and one of my favorite people in the whole world. His sister Maya is one of the sweetest girls I've known. I usually go to visit them every year but this year I couldn't make it and I miss them a lot. Both Tao and his sister Maya (here in the picture with their dogs, Fiona and Finnegan. (I know they miss Finnegan who died not long ago) are very sweet so I can't wait for them to meet Emilio.

El Mundo segun Emilio/The World According to Emilio/

1.Me gusta sonreir, sobre todo porque cuando lo hago, mis padres me prestan mas atencion. Smiling is good, especially because my mom and dad pay more attention to me when I do.

2. Soy lindo incluso cuando lloro, asi que porque no hacerlo, aunque acabo de salir del bano, huelo rico y tengo puesta mi bata de bano. I still look cute when I cry so I might as well do it when I feel like it, even if I just had a bath, smell good and I'm wearing my robe.

3. Mi papa es genial! Cuando mama no esta el me deja jugar en la cama. Me deja ponerme boca abajo y jugar con las almohadas. Siempre se acuerda de proteger la cama por si tengo un accidente. My dad is so cool! When mom is not around, dad plays with me in the bed. He lets me lay face down and plays with the pillows. He always remembers to cover the bed in case I have an accident.

4. No importa que me parezca un poco a Dracula vestido de blanco. Mama me quiere igual. Incluso le encantan mis caras raras. It's OK to look a little bit like Dracula in white. Mom still loves me. She even loves my funny faces.







5. Esta bien hacerme el misterioso de vez en cuando. Mi mirada puede sugerir muchas cosas. Observenme, a ver si saben lo que estoy pensando. It's OK to be mysterious sometimes. My eyes can suggest many different things. Look at me carefully, see if you can guess what I'm thinking.

Daily Changes/Cambios diarios

En unas semanas vuelvo a trabajar asi que quiero aprovechar estos ultimos dias de libertad que me quedan. He vuelto a ir al gimnasio, hoy fui al cine, he salido a pasear y de compras, he escrito a nuevos amigos y estoy pensando en apuntarme a una clase de cocina y a otra de language de
signos. No se cuanto voy a hacer pero por ahora disfruto con
lo planes.

Tambien por supuesto sigo disfrutando de Emilio. Es increible como esta cambiando diariamente. De repente un dia empieza a patear mas que nunca, otro dia hace sonidos nuevos que parece que esta respondiendo a lo que le decimos y otro dia ya empieza pararse cuando lo sujetamos de las manos. Tambien esta empezando a jugar con munecos de peluche, colchas o cualquier cosa que se le ponga en las manos.

Me encanta mirarlo cuando duerme, sobre todo cuando pone el brazo detras de la cabeza.

In a few more weeks I'll go back to work so I've decided to enjoy my last days of freedom. I've started going to the gym, I went to the movies today, I've done some shopping, reading, getting in touch with old friends and I'm thinking about signing up for cooking and sign language classes. We'll see how much I actually do, but for now I've enjoyed just planning it.

I'm also enjoying spending time with Emilio. He is really changing in front of our eyes. One day he starts kicking, the next day he can lift himself up, every day he makes new sounds and although slowly he continues growing. I love watching him sleep, specially when he puts his arms behind his head. He is also making new noises and communicating more. Sometimes it seems he can understand what we say and that he is trying to respond to it.
I love it also when he plays with stuffed animals, quilts or whatever ends up in his hands.
