The greatest thing about seeing the MJ Awards Show live is that the presenter gets to decide who gets each award and she doesn't always know in advance who she's going to give it to. It's not like the Academy Awards, where the presenters just read the name of the winner printed on the card. At the MJs, the presenter hears list of the nominees read back to her and often decides then and there who deserves the prize--and sometimes, she asks to come back to a particularly difficult category. It's a lot more dramatic that way.

I thought Steve-winner Natalie Press was brilliant in My Summer of Love; and Sigourney Weaver won the Beeb and was the only actor to get nominated by the Steves, the Beebs and the MJs; but I dig Emily Mortimer, so I can't complain.

I share the MJ Academy's love for Daniel Day Lewis, who also got the Steve in this category this year.

Curiously, Jeffrey Wright won the Beeb for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for a Steve in the same category, but in both cases it was for Syriana, not Broken Flowers. Jeffrey Wright is clearly a talent (I think his performance in Angels in America may be his best work), and I liked what he did with a small part in Broken Flowers, but I didn't like the movie so much, even though it featured my boy Bill.

What's not to love about Allison Janney? I suspect she enlivens any role she's given.
I was afraid Frances McDormand might win Best Supporting Actress for her performance in North Country. I like Frances, but did not like that movie.

In sum, then, I think the MJs selected fine actors up and down the board, though not all of these movies were my favorites.

I really didn't know which way the MJ Academy would go with its Best Film award. I thought March of the Penguins had a shot, but I'm glad The Ballad of Jack and Rose will take home the trophy.

I was really surprised that Mr. and Mrs. Smith won the Worst Award. I don't remember not liking it. As I recall, the MJ Academy was ready to declare Wallace and Gromit a walk. (A few hours after we saw it, Emilio finally gave his mama's womb a walk; maybe he absorbed some of those walking vibrations.)

So nice to get to blog a little bit. Of these movies, I have not seen (but they're all on my NetFlix list, I think):
Dear Frankie; Me, You and Everyone We Know (I have it in house, right now); The Ballad of Jack and Rose, The Squid and the Whale (don't know anything about this); North Country; Holy Girl (which I won't add to my NetFlix). So, my comments are coming at a real disadvantage in terms of intelligent dialogue. You have caused in me a "Can't Wait" anticipation for the delectability of good movies that I haven't seen. In terms of what I like and don't like, I believe my tastes mirror yours more than Steve's. (Maybe because we're women? Since I do believe that men and women are different.) Do you ever watch Anthony LaPaglia in "Without a Trace." I really appreciate him as an actor, although the series is sometimes tough to watch. I loved Imaginary Heroes, thought Natalie Press was really good in My Summer of Love, but didn't like the movie so much. I did so enjoy Dennis Quaid in In Good Company (and the movie, too, for that matter). Loved the family dynamics and complexities in Imaginary Heroes, and always enjoy Sigourney Weaver even though I sometimes question her choices. My favorite Sigourney movie, Gorillas in the Mist, which I saw alone in Houston, and cried aloud in agony for one of the difficult choices she made. Seperate Lies was a difficult, but engrossing movie to watch. I used not to like Tom Wilkinson, but have come to appreciate his understated characters. Frances McDormand is one of my favorites (my favorite performance except for the obvious Fargo was Primal Fear - excellent). Allison Janney is always a winner. As I view the movies that still remain on my list, I will comment. Thanks for sharing your nominees and winners, Mari. Can't wait for the Mother's Day blog that I will try to get to tomorrow. It's still hard to sit for any length of time.

Jeff Wright was very good in Broken Flowers, I'm glad to see him win. I'm also glad to see Wedding Crashers avoid ignominy. I'm a big fan of Alison Janney, though I did not see Winter Solstice. I think Dad was also a fan of Jack n Rose. Thanks for the awards.

Dear Frankie was on TV last night and I had it on while I was writing up my akeelah report. It held up quite well. It's not daring in any way I can think of. It tastefully tells a hard-core sentimental story. And Emily Mortimer does a great job of keeping it real. I also thought Gerald Butler (the adult male in the film) was excellent.

allison janney rocks--and has done some very fun appearances on the ellen show, in case anyone is interested. akid and i saw mr. and mrs. smith and i remember being uncomfortable. i don't remember why. despite akid's avid devotion to angelina, i don't remember appreciating it very much anyway. and those are the only ones i saw. however, i have also found your movie recs to be very reliable and so will definitely be checking out some of these movies.
oh yeah and daniel day lewis is also a rocker. : )

Thanks for the comments! I realized many of the movies and actors I picked this year have roles of parents or something to do with family dynamics. I didn't realize this until recently, though.

I agree with Ruth that Anthony LaPaglia is great and I agree with the Benton siblings about Allison Janney. She has great charisma and strength, I think.

Melissa, do not worry. It's not too late to see some of these movies.
