I read recently that most babies 7-15 months will try to rub the spot off of the mirror. But at around 18 to 24 months, a toddler will recognize that it is his own nose and try to rub it off of his own face. This marks a "new phase of self-awarenes" and signals the beginnings of embarrassment, envy, and empathy.
